Between Darkness and Light

for harp & piano (2024)

to the Royal Flying Doctor Service

Commissioned by Dr. Adele Stewart

Between Darkness and Light explores the liminal space and time between the physical and figurative states of darkness and light. The work constantly journeys between the two, interlocking figures between the piano and harp never arriving firmly in one state but perpetually shifting between them.

Throughout the work, moments of pause and calm allow meditation and healing, before moving to the next destination – once again shifting between the darkness and the light. The piece ruminates in musical colours of and between each state, finding brightness and clarity in the light, and safety and closure in the dark. Elements of each are transported between their counterpart and weave themselves into soothing harmonies and restorative resonance.

This piece was inspired by reflection on the emotional landscape the Flying Doctors' work encompasses for both those involved in caring and those who are cared for by their services.

Of Light, Divided

for viola, cello & harp (2023)

composed for Sarah Zhu and James Monro

Of Light, Divided is a sonic exploration of light, colour, and motion. The work experiments with musical illustration of the division, reflection, refraction and dispersion of light. It meditates upon light itself; light piercing through droplets of water forming a glorious arc across the sky, a baby absorbed by light and colour for the first time, a prism of glass dividing light into a sweeping array of colour that fills the space.

By taking a single pitch as a pure beam of light, this pitch can be divided in contrary motion, across its harmonic series, against the semitones surrounding it, and more. Moments of calm and momentum are passed around the ensemble as the light is divided and returns to its pure original form time and time again, before being divided once more.
